Trees connect earth and sky. Branches reach for the sun; roots stretch down to bring up water and nutrients. Trees provide nests for birds and seeds and nuts for wildlife, birds, and people. Trees depend on birds, squirrels, winds, and animals to spread their seeds, nuts, and pollen. Trees provide cooling shade, hold the soil back from erosion, absorb flood waters, and release the waters gradually, reducing floods. They store carbon and, with other photosynthesizing plants, provide food for animals. A celtic tree weaves the interconnections of all living things into balance and harmony. I have crouched under a ponderosa pine tree to stay out of the downpour on a summer hike. While winter cross country skiing, we often shelter behind some trees to stay out of the fierce wind coming down from the continental divide. Climbing trees makes me see things in 3 dimensions, swaying. And the view from 40 feet up a tree lets me spot distant mountains. Plus I notice birds flying about and neighboring trees.
